ASTROLOGY

GENERAL INTRODUCTION

Vedas are the oldest, the most authentic and the most sacred scriptures to understand the mysteries of nature. According to Maxmuller, a renowned German scholar of the Vedas, 'Vedas are oldest books in the library of the world.' To understand the meaning of these Vedas, our Rishis, Maharathis have categorised the Vedas into six parts. Astrology is one of them and considered as the sixth sense which helps one to see all the unseen objects and the future events of the world.

Even Astrology is divided into three parts or subdivision :

  1. THEORY (Siddhant).
  2. SAMHITA.
  3. JATAKA.

Siddhant helps us to understand the good and evil results (effects), with the help of minute arithmetic calculations related to rising and setting of the planets, Nakshatras, stars, Rashis, the combination of planets (grahayoga), grahayudha and the eclipse of the Moon and the Sun.

Samhita means the good and evil effects, which occur due to the combination of the planets, day and night transitions and seasonal transitions that affect the whole world.

Jataka means the good and evil effects which occur during the transmigration of a soul through 84 lakh yonis, and the effects which the Isht, Lagna, Graha (planets) Nakshatras, have on the joy, sorrow, gain-loss, destiny and age.

Our most revered sages imagined about the planetary orbits by doing penance and Yoga for a long time. They also observed the motion of these heavenly bodies through a distinct and well-marked path in the sky which contains twelve zodiac signs. These twelve zodiac signs of the solar system are established in the twelve parts of our body. They are as follows:

Forehead - Aries (Mesh)

Mouth - Taurus (Vrishabh)

Chest area - Gemini (Mithun)

Heart - Cancer (Karka)

Stomach - Leo (Simha)

Waist - Virgo (Kanya)

Bladder - Libra (Tula)

Sex organ - Scorpio (Vrishchik)

Thighs - Sagittarius (Dhanu)

Knees - Capricorn (Makara)

Calf of leg - Aquarius (Kumbha)

Feet - Pisces (Meena)

The planets travelling in twelve zodiac signs have affect on the following:

The Sun has effect on - Soul (Aatma)

The Moon has effects on - Mind (Mana)

The Mars has effects on - Patience (Dhairya)

The Mercury has effects on - Voice (Vaani)

The Jupiter has effects on - Reasoning (Viveka)

The Venus has effect on - Sperms (Virya)

The Saturn has effect on - Sensitivity (Samvedana)

This implies that, the position of the seven planets and the twelve Zodiac signs are well established within our body.

The above mentioned organs and parts of the body are greatly influenced by the planets of the solar system and their movement.

Our ancient sages and Rishis, lacking the facilities of laboratories, had established the laws of Solar System, just by observing the internal solar system, which is within the body, with the help of Divine Sight and Yoga Bala.

Colonel Todd was so impressed by Indian Astrology that while mentioning it in his Autobiography 'Todd Rajasthan', has written that 'Where can we find those Astrologers, whose knowledge of the Planetary system is still amazing.'

Similarly, D.Morgan has accepted in his book 'Ancient and Medieval India', that, 'India’s Mathematics and Astrology is of greater value than that of Greece’s. Its contents are ancient and original'.

Today, even the scientific community accepts the fact that the construction of an atom is similar to the solar system. Just as the planets revolve around the Sun in their respective orbits, in the same way, the electrons revolve around the nucleus of the atom. An atom is so small that it cannot be seen with the help of the naked eye. Our body is made up of matter, which itself is made up of atoms. The law governing the movement of the planets around the Sun and the electrons moving around the nucleus of the atom is same.

Thus the planetary system within our body is just a symbol of the solar system. Nature has created the whole world in three qualities (Gunas). They are Satva (quality of goodness) Raja (having both the qualities of Satva and Tama (dark qualities).

The Planets, which have predominantly Satva Guna, shed cool rays, which are like ambrosia (Amrit). The planets, which have Raja Guna, shed mixed rays and the planets with Tamo Guna shed poisonous rays. And the planets, which lack all these three Gunas, have rays without any effect. The auspiciousness and inauspiciousness of the planets have been classified on the basis of these three types of rays.

The concept of 'Muhurta' (Hora, division of time) in Indian Astrology, too is an indication of all the three Gunas of the planets and their effects on humans. The positions of the planets vary because of their movement in their orbits. There are specific moments, during which the atmosphere of the planets are favourable and they shed rays, which are helpful to us, and again there are some specific moments when these planets act harmfully. So there is great importance attached to the concept of Muhurta.

The planets and stars not only have effect on human beings but also on the non-living things. The effects which the Moon and Sun have on the oceans causes high tides and low tides. Even modern science accepts that the 71% of the surface of the earth is covered with water and only 29% is land. Even our bodies and those of all the living beings constitute the same proportion i.e. 71% in water. So, if the Moon can cause tides on a non-living like the ocean, it can definitely affect a man who is a living being with a conscious mind.

PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF INDIAN ASTROLOGY

One of the many mysteries of Indian Astrology is that it does not have any good or evil effects but merely gives us prior information about the events that will occur.

Therefore, the chief objective and usefulness of Astrology is to make prior presumptions of the incidents by studying the nature and qualities of the planets. In this way, we can be alert well in advance and can even transform our sorrow into joy.

People, who believe that things which are bound to happen will certainly happen and cannot be changed, generally have no belief in Astrology. But there is no doubt that the prior knowledge of the favourability and unfavourability of the planets alerts a man to look for remedial methods. It can even make him alert to such an extent so that he takes such precautionary methods which will minimise or even nullify their effects. People who believe in destiny, have classified the Karma (action) in two parts (1) PRARABDHA,
2) ANARABDHA

Prarabdha means those actions, which were committed in the previous life and the results of which one faces in the present life.

Anarabdha means those actions, which are committed in the present life, or are about to be committed and the results will be faced in the next birth.

It is impossible to do Karmas without aims or objectives. The theory of Bhagyawada (Fatalism) is that one should do such Karmas, which give good results in the present and the next birth. People who do not believe in 'PUNARJANMA' (Reincarnation), work hard and do virtuous actions, but still remain poor and unhappy. On the other hand, there are people who do little work but still manage to acquire and accumulate wealth and enjoy life to the full extent. And again there are rich people who face the wrath of the nature and become poor. What are the reasons for that? Do the people, who don’t believe in destiny, have any explanations?

The Sun and the Moon are considered as the two principle planets, in Indian Astrology. The Sun is considered to be a 'PURUSHA' (Masculine) and the Moon is considered to be a 'STREE' or 'PRAKRITI' (Feminine). The planets, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter, Venus and Saturn have been said to be the five elements. The Astrological cycle moves around with the help of Purusha, Prakriti and all the five elements, altogether.

SUPERIORITY OF INDIAN ASTROLOGY

Today, almost all the newspapers and magazines publish daily predictions on the basis of date of birth and Sun signs (Zodiac sign); the western Astrology considers the Sun as the principal planet, whereas in Indian astrology, Moon has been given that honour. Due to this contradiction in the two systems, people get confused.

In Indian Astrology, both the Sun and the Moon have been given prominence. The factor affecting the Atma (Soul) is the Sun and the factor affecting the 'Mana' (Mind) is the Moon.

It implies that our body remains active as long as the symbol of Surya (Sun) that is Atma in our body exists. Without it, our body has no meaning. For the accomplishment of any work, we need a healthy body. So it is obvious that the Sun is the most important.

On the other hand, Moon is a factor affecting the mind (Mana). Indian philosophy considers that Mind is the principle factor that affects our feelings like joy and sorrow, wealth and poverty, and rise and fall etc.

According to Shankaracharya
MUN EVA MANUSHYAANAAM KAARANAM BANDH MOKSHAYOH

The great Poet Kalidas has said that
SARVASVE DVAYA SUMATI KUMATI SAMPADAAPATTI HETUH|

Kabir has said
AKATHA KATHAA MUN KI BADEE
TAA JUG KAAL NA KHAAYA

All these statements stress upon the greatness of the mind.
Our body can be compared with a chariot, our mind–the charioteer, and our sense organs as the horses of the chariot. Just as a charioteer controls the horses pulling the chariot, in the same way, our mind controls the body and senses and is not controlled by Atma (soul).

The importance of mind is, thus, obvious. Similarly the Moon, which has been compared to the mind, causes tides in the ocean. It is only because of the Moon's motion that we know when it would be a high tide or a low.

Thus it is adequately proved that the zodiac signs based on the Chandra (Moon) and the calculations of Dasha (position of planets) and the calculations of Rashiphala (prediction made on the basis of zodiac signs) is relatively more subtle and near perfection.

Time Division

TIME has been given the same type of importance in the science of astrology, which has been given to money in Economics, to fire in Chemistry and to wheel in Physics.
Our ancient sages had knowledge of the subtlest division of the time. They got this knowledge with the help of their divine-sight; in their deep state of meditation. They also knew about PAST, PRESENT and FUTURE with the same divine sight.

According to our scriptures, 'the time taken to tear apart the softest of petals of a lotus' is called 'TRUTI'

100 Trutis make 1 Lub
30 Lub make 1 Nimesh
27 Nimesh make 1 Guru Akshar
10 Guru Akshar Make 1 Pran
6 pran Vighatika make 1 Ghatika or Dand
60 Ghati make 1 day and night

That means, in a day and night, there are 17,49,60,000,00 Trutis altogether, we may just wonder about the genious of our ancient sages and Rishis, because today, inspite of having facilities of modern laboratories and equipments, the modern science could identify 1 (one) second as the shortest division of the time. Thus, according to Western science, there are 86,400 seconds in a day and night, whereas in Indian science, a day and night consists of 17,49,60,000,00 Trutis.

According to another system, the division of time has been made as follows :

60 Tatparas = 1 Paras
60 Paras = 1 Vilipta
60 Vilipta = 1 Lipta
60 Lipta = 1 Ghatika (Dand)
60 Ghatika = 1 Day & Night

Therefore, it is clear that there are 46,65,60,000,00 Tatparas in a day and night.

SATYUG 4,32,000 YEARS X 4 = 17,28,000 YEARS
TRETA 4,32,000 YEARS X 3 = 12,96,000 YEARS
DWAPAR 4,32,000 YEARS X 2 = 8,64,000 YEARS
KALIYUG 4,32,000 YEARS X 1 = 4,32,000 YEARS

1 MAHAYUG (GRAND TOTAL OF ALL THE YUGAS) = 43,20,000 YEARS
71 MAHAYUG = 43,20,000X71 = 1 MANVANTAR
1 MANVANTAR = 30,6720,000 YEARS
14 MANVANTAR = 4,29,40,80,000 YEARS
(There are 14 Manvantars)

The earth remains submerged in the water for the period of 8,64,000 years i.e half the number of Satyug, before the start of each Manvantar, it also remains submerged in the water for the same number of years, i.e. 8,64,000 years, after the completion of each Manvantar.
So in 14 Manvantars the number of years
17,28,000 x 15 = 2,59,20,000
(Number of year in Satyug)
+ 14 Manvantar = 42,9, 40,80,000
1 Kalpa = 43,2,0000000 years

One day & night of Brahma = 4,320,000 Mahayug * 1000 = 4,32,00,00,000 years

Since the one moment in the life of Brahma is considered to be of our 10 years, therefore the age of Brahma in 100 years will be

4,32,00,00,000 x 360 x 100 = 155520 00 000 00 years

Therefore, it is quite clear that our ancient Rishis, with the help of their divine sight, had calculated the most minute and the most subtle division of time, as well as the most greater division, for the benefit of the mankind and which are followed by millions of Hindus even today.

OM TAT SAT BRAHMANONHI DWITEEYA PARARDHE SHRI SHVET VAARAAH KALPE SAPTAME VAIVASHVATA MANVANTARE ASHTAVINSHATI TAME KALI YUGE KALI PRATHAMA CHARANE.

(I make a resolution to begin this auspicious work in the second PRAHAR (a period of three hours) of the day Brahma, in the KALPA named 'SHVETA VAARAAH' in the 28th YUGA OF 'VAIVASHVAT MANVANTARA', in the first part of the Kali Yuga etc.)

That implies that there are 14 Manvantaras altogether. The present period is passing through the seventh Manvantara.

One Manvantara consists of 71 Mahayugs, out of which 27 Mahayugs have already passed. We are passing through the first phase of the Kali Yuga which itself is the third Yuga of the 28th Mahayuga and which has come after the passing of Satya Yuga, Treta and Dwapar Yuga.

The year of the Sankalpa can be ascertained from the beginning of the Kalpa as follows.

The time period of Manvantara (exclusive period, when the earth is submerged in water, in the beginning and in the end) = 30,67,20,000 years

1) Multiplying these years by 6 = 30,67,20,000 x 6 (Because we are in the midst of 7th Manvantara, of the Svetvaaraah Kalpa and 6 Manvantaras have already passed) = 1,84,03,00,000 years

The time period of Pralaya consists of 17,28,000 years since 7 Pralayas have passed, after the end of 6th Kalpa and before the beginning of 7th Kalpa, so 17,28,000x 7 = 1,20,96,000 years

After adding 1 2 2) we get

1,84,03, 00 000

+ 120 96 000

1,85, 23, 96 000 years

Therefore, after 1,85,24,16,000 years 'VAIVASVAT MANVANTARA' has started

2) 27 Mahayugs of Vaivasvat Manvantara have passed, 1 Mahayuga consists of 43,20,000 years. So after multiplying it with 27, we get,

43,20,000 x 27 = 11,66,40,000 years

+ 1,85,24,16,000 years

Total = 1,96,90,56,000 years

3) Now the time period of Kali Yuga in the 28th Yuga =

Time period of Satya Yuga = 17,28,000

Time period of Treta = 12,96,000

Time period of Dwapar = 8,64,000

TOTAL = 38,88,000

Since all the above three Yugas have already passed, it means that after 38,88,000 years, Kali Yuga came into existence.

4) Kali Yuga started on Bhadrapada,

Krishnapaksha -13th day, in Vyatipaat yoga at midnight, in the Aashlesha Nakshatra

And the age of the Kali Yuga has been fixed as 5101 years as till date that is Vikram Samvat 2057, Shaka 1922 and 2000 AD.

Sum of all the three Yugs = the Sum of 27 Mahayugas and Manvantar + the time period of Kali Yuga till date

38,88,000
1969056000 5101
1972949101 years

Kalpa consist of 4,32,00,00,000 years and out of these 1,97,29,49,101 years have passed

Therefore, the earth's existence, according to the methods, devised by our ancient sages, comes up to 1,97,29,49,101 years till date.

Many geologists too agree well with the age of the earth as given by our Rishis.

On 22nd of March 1920, while giving a lecture in Patna, Professor Satyacharan Chatterjee said that the age of the earth is 1,50,00,00,000 years. Sir J. Jeans, in his lecture on the subject of mysterious universe, considered that the earth exists since 2,00,00,00,000 years.

PANCHANG (CALENDAR)

Although it is essential to have the knowledge of arithmetical calculations to understand Indian Astrology, but for the benefit of the common people, astrologers have devised a calendar (Panchang) with the help of which, and simple arithmetical calculations, one can have knowledge about planets, good or bad for him.

It is not necessary for a common man to be an astrologer in order to understand the Panchanga. But for a smooth and systematic running of life, one should know how to interpret 'Phalita'.

Panchang means five organs to understand the Phalita. These five things are –

  1. Tithi (Date)
  2. Nakshatra (Group of stars)
  3. Yoga (an auspicious moment)
  4. Karan (Half of the part of Tithi)
  5. Vaar (days of the week)

TITHI

Tithi is considered as the first phase or portion (Kala) of the 16 phases of the Moon. The 15 days, commencing from Amavasya (the last day of the dark half of a lunar month) to Purnima (Full moon), are called the Tithis of the Shukla-Paksha (brighter phase) and the days commencing from Purnima to Amavasya are called Krishna Paksha (darker phase).

In Indian Astrology, the calculation of the Tithis starts from Pratipada (The first day in each half of the lunar month) of the Shukla-Paksha. They are:

  1. Pratipada.
  2. Dwitiya.
  3. Tritiya.
  4. Chaturthi.
  5. Panchami.
  6. Shashthi.
  7. Saptami.
  8. Ashtami.
  9. Navami.
  10. Dashami.
  11. Ekadasi.
  12. Dwadashi.
  13. Trayodashi.
  14. Chaturdashi.
  15. Purnima.

Similarly, in the Krishna-Paksha, starting from Pratipada till Chaturdashi, all the dates are same; the only difference being the fifteenth day which is Amavasya (Moonless night)

These fifteen days have been given five names:

NANDA BHADRA JAYA RIKTA PURNA
1st day
2nd day 3rd day 4th day 5th day
6th day 7th day
8th day 9th day 10th day
11th day 12th day 13th day 14th day 15th day
Friday Wednesday Tuesday Saturday Thursday
Made with HTML Tables

If the above mentioned days falls on the given Tithis it is considered as auspicious and the work taken in hand in successfully accomplished. For example (if, 1st, 6th 11th falls on Friday, 2nd, 7th, 12th falls on Wednesday etc.)

INAUSPICIOUS DAYS – The following days (Tithis) are considered to be inauspicious, and there is a fear of hurdles, obstructing the accomplishment of the work. The names of these auspicious days have been given as follows:

  1. DAGDHA
  2. VISHA
  3. HUTASHAN

The dates are considered to be inauspicious if it falls on the following days:

MON. TUES. WED. THURS. FRI. SAT. SUN.
DAGDHA 12th 11th 5th 3rd 6th 8th 9th
VISHA 4th 6th 7th 2nd 8th 9th 7th
HUTASHAN 12th 6th 7th 8th 9th 10th 11th
Made with HTML Tables

If 12th day and 4th day of the months falls on Sunday and 11th & 6th falls on Monday and 5th & 7th falls on Tuesday respectively, they are considered as inauspicious.

NAKSHATRA (CONSTELLATION) – A group of stars is called Nakshatra. Just as the units used for measuring the distance is miles or kilometers in the same way the space (Akash Mandal) is measured in terms of Nakshatras (group of stars). The whole space has been divided into 27 parts and each part has been given the name of Nakshatra. They are as follows

  1. ASHWINI.
  2. BHARANI.
  3. KRITIKA.
  4. ROHINI.
  5. MRIGASHIRA.
  6. AARDRA.
  7. PUNARVASU.
  8. PUSHYA.
  9. AASLESHA.
  10. MAGHA.
  11. PURVA PHALGUNI.
  12. UTTARA PHALGUNI.
  13. HASTA.
  14. CHITRA.
  15. SWATI.
  16. VISHAKHA.
  17. ANURADHA.
  18. JYESHTHA.
  19. MOOLA.
  20. POORVAASHADHA.
  21. UTTARAASHADHA.
  22. SHRAVANI.
  23. DHANISTHA.
  24. SHATABHISHA.
  25. PURVA BHADRAPADA.
  26. UTTARA BHADRAPADA.
  27. REVATI.

The Indian astrologers believe that the combination of the last 15 Ghati of 'Uttarashadha Nakshatra' and the first 4 Ghati of the Shravani Nakshatra i.e. 19 Ghatis in all, constitute the 'Abhijeet Nakshatra' and this particular Nakshatra is considered to be very auspicious to begin a good work. (One Ghatika is equal to 24 minutes)

PANCHAKA NAKSHATRA: The following group of five Nakshatras are considered as having five defects (Panchakadosha). They are Dhanistha, Shatabhisha, Purvabhadrapada, Uttarabhadrapada and Revati.

MOOLA NAKSHATRA: A child taking birth in this Nakshatra, which consists of Jyestha, Aashlesha, Revati, Mool, Magha and Ashwini Nakshatra are not considered as auspicious. Therefore, for the pacification of this 'Moola Nakshatra', some specific rites are performed 27th days after the birth when the same Nakshatra returns. Out of these six Nakshatras, which constitute Moola Nakshatra, Jyeshtha and Moola are called 'Gandant Moola' and Aashlesha is called as 'Sarpa Moola'.

ADHOMUKHA NAKSHATRA: As the name of this Nakshatra implies, works like digging a well, or lying a foundation is considered as auspicious. This particular Nakshatra is itself constituted by Nakshatras. They are: Moola, Aashlesha, Vishakha, Kritika, Purvaphalguni, Purvashadha, Purvabhadrapada, Bharani and Magha

DAGDHA NAKSHATRA: For commencement of any work, this Nakshatra is considered as inauspicious. Therefore, commencing any work in this Nakshatra is prohibited if the days on which, this Nakshatra falls are as under-
Sunday - Bharani
Monday - Chitra
Tuesday - Uttarashadha
Wednesday - Dhanishtha
Thursday - Uttaraphalguni
Friday - Jyeshtha
Saturday - Revati

YOGA (COMBINATIONS)
There are 27 Yogas in all. They are as under
1) VISHAKUMBHA, 2) PREETI, 3) AAYUSHMAN, 4) SAUBHAGYA, 5) SHOBHANA, 6) ATIGANDA, 7) SUKARMA, 8) DHRITI, 9) SHOOLA, 10) GAND, 11) VRIDDHI, 12) DHRUVA, 13) VYAGHAATA, 14) HARSHANA, 15) VAJRA, 16) SIDDHI, 17) VYATIPAATA, 18) VARIYAANA, 19) PARIGHA, 20) SHIVA, 21) SIDDHA, 22) SADDHYA, 23) SHUBHA, 24) SHUKLA, 25) BRAHMA, 26) INDRA, 27) VAIDHRITI.

KARANA Half of the part of a Tithi is called a Karana i.e. There are two Karanas in a Tithi. There are 11 Karanas altogether. They are: 1) BALA, 2) BAALAVA, 3) KAULAVA, 4) TAITIL, 5) GARA, 6) VANIJA, 7) VISHTI, 8) SHAKUNI, 9) CHATUSHPADA, 10) NAAGA, 11) KINSTUGHNA The first 7 of these Karanas are movable (Chara) i.e. it cannot be predetermined as to on which dates, these are going to occur, but the last 4 Karanas are fixed (Sthira), and hence can be predetermined.

VISHTIKARANA is also called 'Bhadra' and commencing any work during this time is prohibited. Bhadra is marked very clearly in every panchanga.

VAAR (DAYS)
There are 7 days i.e. Sunday (Ravivaar), Monday (Somavaar), Tuesday (Mangalvaar), Wednesday (Budhvaar), Thursday (Brihaspativaar), Friday (Shukravaar) and Saturday (Shanivaar). The counting of days begins from the sunrise of the first day to the sunrise of the second day. In astrology, this system is known as 'AHORATRA', which means day and night taken together. Omitting the first letter 'A' and the last three letters 'T','R','A', the word 'HORA' is coined from which, the English word 'HOUR' originated. There are 24 HORAS in all.
Now the question arises, why is the day coming after Sunday is named Monday, Why not other day. To understand this, we will first have to understand the positions of the planets, in the space. In astrology, the respective position of the planets are given as under –

Saturn, Jupiter, Mars, Sun, Venus, Mercury and Moon.

Therefore, Saturn is the highest or the farthest planet. Below the Saturn is Jupiter, below Jupiter is Mars, below the Mars is Sun, below the Sun is Venus, below Venus is Mercury, and below Mercury is Moon. All the planets are revolving around the Sun in their respective orbits. Since there are 24 Horas in a day combined with night, therefore, each Hora consists of an hour. The ‘Lord’ of each Hora is a planet from the nearest lower orbit.
The Lord of the first HORA is the Sun. In the beginning of the creation, the Sun was visible first of all and for that very reason, it has been considered as the lord of the first Hora and also the first day has been named after it. The next Hora is named after 'Shukra' (Venus, which is the lord of the second HORA, and whose orbit is just below the Sun. The lord of the third Hora is 'Budha' (Mercury) whose orbit is just below that of Shukra (Venus). The lord of the fourth orbit is the Moon (Chandrama), whose orbit is below that of Venus and so on. In this way, the lord of the 24th HORA is again Mercury and the Moon (Chandrama). The following chart clearly shows the positions of the planets (horizontally) in order, and the days of the week (vertically) in order. From the Hora chart, it is quite clear that the Moon is the lord of the first Hora (Hour) of the second day(Monday), hence the next day after Sunday is called Monday. Similarly, the lord of the first Hora of the third day is Mars (Tuesday), the lord of the first Hora of the fourth day is Mercury (Wednesday), the lord of the first Hora of the fifth day is Jupiter (Thursday), the lord of the first Hora of the sixth day is Venus (Friday) and the lord of the first Hora of the Seventh day is Saturn (Saturday).
Therefore, the name of the days in order are Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

GENTLE DAYS: Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday are considered as the 'gentle' days. These days are considered auspicious for commencing any good work.

CRUEL DAYS: Tuesday, Sunday and Saturday are considered as 'cruel' days. Saturday is considered an auspicious day for undergoing operation. Thursday is considered auspicious for starting education. Wednesday is considered auspicious to start any business.

THE BIRTH CHART

(Kundali Or Janma Patree) Or The Horoscope

The BIRTH CHART (JANMA PATREE) personifies the accumulated Karmas (actions) of a man’s previous birth. Just as a huge Banyan tree is culminated in its roots, similarly, the birth chart shows the Karmas man has committed in his previous births. A man faces the consequences (Joys and Sorrows) of those accumulated Karmas and destiny in his present life, which can be compared with a boat, with the help of his actions of the present birth, which is like the helm of the boat.

So the BIRTH CHART gives information regarding fate and destiny. It is possible to make slight changes in the consequences of the unforeseen actions committed in one’s previous birth, by doing appropriate Karmas in the present birth. The chief use of the Birth Chart is to have knowledge of the unforeseen, and rectify the actions accordingly. We can change the course of the misfortune, if we have the prior knowledge of our destiny. But if the intensity of the unforeseen Karmas of the previous birth is stronger, one is sure to face its consequences, and one cannot change it. Similarly, if the Karmas of the present birth are stronger (Pious and good actions), the unforeseen accumulated Karmas of the previous birth, will not be able to have an effect on the present life.

While preparing the Birth Chart, three facts are required-
1) Birth time
2) Date of Birth
3) Place of Birth

Suppose, a child takes birth in Mumbai on 17/7/2000 at 2.20 afternoon. Now first of all, we find out the 'ISHTA GHANTA' (Desired-Hour). The method of finding out the ISHTA GHANTA is as follows:

Time of birth – Sunrise Time = ISHTA GHANTA

Time of Birth = 2.20 = 14.20

Time of Sunrise = 6.11
Ishta Ghanta = 8.9
By multiplying the Ishta Ghanta with 21/2 we get Ishta Ghati,
So Ishta Ghanta x 2 ½ = Ishta Ghati

CONTEMPLATION ON THE TWELVE HOUSES OF THE HOROSCOPE

If a planet looks at any house or the Bhava of the horoscope, or the planet already present in that particular house, it gives auspicious results to the concerned person. Similarly, if a planet looks at the ascendant house, which is also the first house of the horoscope, or if it looks at the Moon, it is considered as the most auspicious and bestows the person with RAJAYOGA (kingship).

All the twelve houses in a horoscope represent twelve zodiac signs. To know the results of the each of the twelve houses of the horoscope, it is necessary to know, first of all, about the effect of the zodiacs established in those houses, along with the nature of the planet present in that particular house and the relation between the zodiac and the planet. Whether the zodiac is ‘friendly' a 'hostile' zodiac to that planet, or if the zodiac is the house of that planet, or whether the zodiac marks the high position of that planet, or the low position, all these factors have to be taken into consideration.

Then, the synergized effects of the planet and the zodiac of that house should be determined.

Powerfulness or powerlessness of these combinations of the planet and houses or zodiac signs, determines the intensity of the effects of the house or Bhava, the zodiac or the planet.

Again, if an auspicious planet is present in any house, it adds to the auspicious results of that house or Bhava. Similarly, if an inauspicious planet occupies a house or Bhava, it destroys the power of that house.
But this rule is not applicable to the inauspicious houses, for example the sixth, the eighth and the twelfth houses of the horoscope are considered as inauspicious houses and hence even if auspicious planets occupy them, they will give inauspicious results.
But, an inauspicious planet present in an inauspicious house like the sixth, the eighth or the twelfth house, gives auspicious results.

CONTEMPLATION ON THE ASCENDANT HOUSE

1) The first house or the ascendant house of the horoscope specifies about the beauty, complexion, courage, body, marks on the body, caste, joy and pleasure, miseries and sorrow, head, maternal grand father, paternal grand mother etc.
If the auspicious planets like Mercury, Jupiter and Venus are present in the sixth, seventh and eighth houses respectively from the position of the ascendant and the Moon also, and if they are not seen or influenced by any inauspicious planet, these formations are considered to be very auspicious, and give immense wealth and bestow kingship to the concerned person. If all the auspicious planets are present in the ascendant house itself ,it always gives auspicious and good results.
If an inauspicious planet is present in the ascendant house, the results would be inauspicious and the person would be full of bitterness and would have sorrows and miseries in his life.

2) If a powerful and auspicious planet is present in the ascendant house, the person is fat and stoically built. If the Moon is present in the ascendant house and is either combined by an inauspicious planet or seen by it, the person suffers from cold and excessive element of wind. If there is an inauspicious planet on the eastern part of the ascendant, he has migraine in the left side of his head and if the inauspicious planet is on the western part of the ascendant, he has migraine in the right side of his head.
Here, if the auspicious planet is of the 'JALACHARA RASHI' (wet zodiac), the person is a fat man. But if there is a weak and inauspicious planet in the 'SHUSHKA RASHI' (Dry zodiac), the person will have a weak or medium body.

3) If there is a weak Moon in the ascendant house, the person is hydrophobic or fearful of water. If there is a powerful Mars in the ascendant house, the person is very lusty even in his old age and is also capable of satisfying his lust. If there is a Mercury, he has a child like nature all through his life.
If there is Jupiter, either in the ascendant house or in the second house, the person loves sweetmeats and sweet things, and talks sweetly.
If there is only Mercury either in the ascendant house or in the second house, he likes bitter things.
If the Moon and the Venus are in the ascendant house and second house respectively, he likes to eat ‘sour’ things but if Rahu (Dragon’s head) or Ketu (Dragon’s tail) is also in the ascendant house and the Saturn is in the second house in the horoscope of a person, he loves to eat such things as have fiery taste, especially chillies.
If either the Mars, or the Sun or the Saturn is in the ascendant house, the person is a hypocrite, an addict, is bitter-tongued and likes bitter things.

4) If the ‘Lord of the Ascendant’ is an auspicious and powerful planet, or there is an auspicious planet in the ascendant house, the person enjoys a long life. Similarly, if there is an inauspicious planet in the ascendant house, he has a short life. If there is either the Mars or the Sun in the ascendant house, he has an insatiable nature, unlimited desires. If there is an inauspicious planet in the ascendant house and the Moon is either combined with the Jupiter or an inauspicious planet, he suffers from severe pain in his head. If an inauspicious planet looks at the Venus established in the seventh house of the Mars, which itself is established in the twelfth house, the person suffers from excess of wind in his body.
If the Moon is established in the centre and is surrounded by the inauspicious planets and the Sun is established in the seventh house, the person suffers from respiratory problems, T.B. and excessive wind in his body.
Similarly, if an inauspicious planet, established in the third or fifth or eleventh house and is not seen by an auspicious planet and an auspicious planet established in the seventh house is not seen by an auspicious planet, the person suffers from dental diseases.
If the ‘Lord of the ascendant’ is placed either with the Sun or the Mars in the same house, the person is prone to burning and suffers from excessive bile element in his body.

IMPOTENCY

If the Saturn is established in either the eighth or tenth house along with the Venus and they are not seen by an auspicious planet or if the Saturn is of the low position and is established in either the sixth or the twelfth house, the person suffers from impotency.
